New Paltz Rally Against Gun Insanity/Community Forum

On March 14, 2018, as part of a national call for action, Move Forward New York collaborated with several student and community groups to hold three events to raise awareness of the national gun crisis. This event was held in collaboration with: Move Forward New York, UUP, Faso Friday, Indivisible CD 19 NY, Tin Horn Uprising, Democracy Matters, New York Students Rising, Peace Action at New Paltz, Take Back the Night, and the Latin American Student Association

Community Forum panelists included:
Ellie Condelles is a SUNY New Paltz student and Democracy Matters member who lost a family member to gun violence

Dr. James Halpern discussed gun violence as a public health issue. He is a professor emeritus of psychology, the founding director of the Institute for Disaster Mental Health and a lead trauma counselor for Newtown families in the wake of the Sandy Hook shootings

Dr. Rennie Scott Childress Ward III, history professor and Alderman on the Kingston Common Council, discussed second amendment issues.

Rob Cox is the Global Editor of Breakingviews/Reuters, the 2017 James H. Ottaway Sr. Visiting Professor of Journalism and a Newtown parent who helped found Sandy Hook Promise. He discussed the economics of the gun industry and the NRA.
